Dan Kammen has written a blog post discussing the upcoming UNFCCC conference in Durban, South Africa, the Scaling up Renewable Energy in Low-Income Countries program (SREP), and how the poor can benefit from both.
Kammen, the World Bank’s Chief Technical Specialist for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, writes that while the UNFCCC process is still working toward binding accords, local success stories can help push the climate change agenda forward. Critically, Kammen acknowledges the importance of non-grid technologies, such as solar lanterns and sustainable household fuels, that can begin helping the poor now.
