IFC’s dismissive response to the CAO’s findings regarding the Tata Mundra plant was met with immediate and heavy backlash from NGOs, especially those surrounding the Gujarati power plant. The full press statement from Machimar Adhikar Sangharsh Sangathan, along with the documents in question (IFC response, CAO audit), can be found here.
Since that time, though, there has been a steady stream of media coverage on the issue, as well as grassroots movements to heighten attention to the IFC’s major lapse in judgment. A Facebook page, entitled “Wake up Kim”, addresses World Bank President Dr. Jim Yong Kim and criticizes his mixed messages with the Tata Mundra ruling through a series of images. This update aims to compile these pictures, along with the key media pieces associated with the growing Tata movement.
Sierra Club’s Justin Guay takes issue with Tata Mundra from the dire financial implications it faces, interweaving it with the gross environmental and social safeguards it fails to meet. (Huffington Post)
The Hindu Business Line takes a similar stance, stating in their title that “no organization can survive if it incurs losses continuously.” (Hindu Business Line)
Articles on the issue from Business Standard, MeriNews, AllVoices, Livemint, Counterview, Basta!, and Down to Earth have also been published.
Related to Dr. Kim’s recent visit with Pope Francis, the group came out with the following image, supplemented by the work of Italian author Antonio Tricarico (Google Translation of Italian article).
