The Mesoamerican Pre-Congress of Areas Protected by Indigenous Peoples, an initiative by the Mesoamerican Alliance of People and Forests, will take place on March 17th and 18th in San Jose, Costa Rica.
With the goal of assessing, valuing and projecting the contributions of indigenous peoples to conservation of protected areas in Mesoamerica, the Pre-Congress seeks to initiate a conversation about the territorial rights agenda of indigenous peoples and forest communities in Mesoamerica.
The themes to be discussed during the Pre-Congress include the development and current status of Areas Protected by Indigenous Peoples, territorial governance, indigenous REDD+, and the future of the Central American System of Protected Areas (SICAP).
More than 80 representatives from social organizations, the government, and civil society will participate in the Mesoamerican Pre-Congress of Areas Protected by Indigenous Peoples. The Pre-Congress is the first part of the 4th Annual Mesoamerican Congress of Protected Areas: “From earth to sea, intertwining peoples and ecosystems,” which will take place in San Jose from March 18th to 21st, 2014.
The events during the two-day Pre-Congress include:
- Three keynote lectures, contributing to a general framework for the analysis of the Pre-Congress’ main themes
- A panel discussion on the current context in Mesoamerica, based on national experiences
- Two thematic panel discussions on (1) the relationship among territorial rights, national REDD+ strategies, and protected areas, and (2) the Central American System of Protected Areas
- A group work session to produce proposals for priority themes and actions in Mesoamerica for the 2014-2016 period
- A plenary session to build a consensus on the “Mesoamerican Agenda of Territorial Governance and Strengthening of Areas Protected by Indigenous Peoples 2014-2016”
The Bank Information Center, in collaboration with the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests, will hold the “Second International Workshop on Social and Environmental Safeguards in Indigenous Territories and Forest Communities of Mesoamerica” in San Jose on the two days prior to the Pre-Congress.
