IRN, GVC and BIC have released a report on the proposed Lom Pangar Dam in eastern Cameroon, outlining concerns about the anticipated impacts of the project on the environment and local communities and questioning the selection of the dam as the best way to resolve the country’s energy crisis. The report suggests that the Lom Pangar project responds to the energy demand of the aluminum industry in Cameroon rather than the needs of the majority of Cameroonians lacking access to electricity. The authors recommend that a participatory energy needs and options assessment and additional studies be undertaken before determining whether the project is the best choice for the country’s population.
