The World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) held the fourth in a series of five regional workshops on “Social Inclusion in the Preparation of National REDD+ Strategies” on January 20th – 24th in Antigua, Guatemala. The workshop was attended by government, indigenous, and civil society representatives engaged in REDD+ strategy development in Argentina and seven Mesoamerican countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama. Civil society and indigenous participants were nominated by each country’s REDD+ focal point, and BIC attended the workshop in its capacity as Northern CSO Observer to the FCPF.
The workshop focused on exchange of experiences among countries, consultation and participation, Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA), and grievance redress mechanisms. Throughout the course of the week, several topics repeatedly emerged as key themes or sources of concern to participants across countries: land tenure, safeguard identification and application, and political will to advance REDD+ processes on the part of the government. After the regional-level workshops conclude with a final workshop in Africa, the FCPF Facility Management Team plans to continue capacity building for FCPF countries through national level workshops.
