In July 2013, the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Forest (AIDESEP) and the Federation of Native Communities of the Madre Dios River and its Tributaries (FENAMAD) recorded a video of members of the indigenous community “Mashco Piro,” an indigenous group that lives in voluntary isolation in Peru.
The video constitutes definitive proof of the existence of uncontacted indigenous peoples (those that live in voluntary isolation), which the Peruvian government has consistently denied. The video was recorded near Las Piedras River, in the community of Monte Salvado in Madre de Dios, where members of the Mashco Piro community had been forced to go because of the ongoing loss of their ancestral territory. This loss of territory is due to highway construction, an increase in jobs in the concessions area known as “Lote 88” (part of the Camisea natural gas project), and illegal logging.
