Matthew Kotchen will serve at the new Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environment and Energy, leading the Treasury office responsible for developing, coordinating and executing energy and environmental policies, both in the United States and internationally.
Kotchen is an associate professor of environmental economics and policy at Yale University and also serves as a faculty research fellow with the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The office’s current priorities include implementing the G-20 commitment to end fossil energy subsidies, as well as negotiating financial elements of the Durban and Doha international agreements. Kotchen graduated from University of Vermont with a B.A. and received M.S. degrees in Environmental Policy from the University of Maine and the University of Michigan, as well as a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan.
